Currently we have developed the basis of a working SMT Lead Free process. At this time we are testing this process to ensure that it is repeatable and consistent, and if necessary to determine what limitations or restrictions may have to be applied.

At the same time we are testing different alloys and flux compositions to determine baseline process, equipment, and materials that we will use for hand soldering. Once we are satisfied with our material selection and process, we will be training our operators. Following training we will be testing our operators and submitting samples for lab analysis to verify the metallurgical integrity of their work.

For wave soldering we will likely be developing a quick change wave solder pot system so that lead free can be run as required with a quick change over of the solder module, thus maximizing the utilization of our existing wave solder system, and avoiding a large capital expenditure into equipment and a process which will soon be obsolete.

Rework methods tools and standards development will begin once the primary manufacturing issues have been addressed.

Our Lead Free and ROHS program will matter to every employee in our facility. We have outlined three levels of detail for our employee training program which we are currently developing. This plan will teach, explain, and test three different levels of content for the appropriate student.

On the shop floor, we are preparing information and visual recognition tools to create a very visual marking and compliance program for products which will require Lead Free and ROHS compliance declarations.
